Applications > Railway Applications

Applications within the railway industry are particularly diverse, including functions on locomotives, rolling stock, tracks, signals and power distribution as well as conventional uses in maintenance and building. Examples include the following.

A heavy dutyy linear solenoid for on board drive pathway switching. This special bistable solenoid operates over a wide temperature range (-40°C .. +70°C) and at high variants of nominal voltage (-30%, +35%). Effectively these solenoids operate contactor devices directly.

The Solenoid Company has manufactured special solenoids for trackside installation security. A modified standard linear solenoid is used as part of an integrated locking mechanism that prevents unauthorised access to trackside enclosures. The robust device operates as part of a remote securty network, suitable for the extremes of external temperatures throughout the UK.

Passenger turnstyles, operated by tickets, use standard variant bistable linear solenoids selected for long life.

Sefety interlock on passenger car doors use a solenoid operated mechanism that is controlled remotely by the train manager.

The Solenoid Comapny has developed a special solenoid for the operation of fire extinguisers in locomotives. Here the application calls for a very high force for the relevant size, to operate the jets of a fire supressent system. Construction is such that each solenoid can withstand the arduous enviroment found insinde engine compartments, notably heat and vibration.

These are just some examples of experiences we have within the railway industry. The Solenoid Company understands solenoids.
