Automation within automobiles is now more common place than ever. The most frequent use of a solenoid is an interlock device for integration into automatic gearbox drive selectors. The function prevents the selection of "drive" without first receiving a release signal from brake pedal and the prevention of the engine being started with drive being selected, starting is only possible in park. Kuhnke solenoids are used in Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz & Volkswagen automobiles amongst others. Similar applcations include ignition operated steering column interlocks with gear selection.
Typically a 12VDC 5W special slimline solenoid is used that can function
within the -40°C to +80°C ambient temperature range, and operating voltage
fluctuations typically apply in-car. Low noise is a major design criteria.
Other applications for solenoids include petrol cap locking (Aston Martin Cars), in-car entertainment release mechanisms(BMW Cars), antivibration engine mountings(solenoids with hydraulics), air conditioning controls(Spyder Cars) and security systems.
Many small linear solenoids, have power consumptions as low as 2W, weigh only 25g and are provided in large volumes at very competitive prices
Kuhnke brand solenoids are manufactured to quality standards. You can see the current TUV certification to VDA6 Part 1 and QS 9000 by clicking on Quality Certification navigation in our Home section
Automotive applications are not just for cars. We supply solenoids for integration into joystick controls(Agricultural), and for lorry systems. The common factors are always the same: more arduous operating conditions, industy quality standards, and customised mechanical and electrical interfacing. In addition we can also supply the electronic circuitary to interface and drive the solenoid.
